Rotate PDF

Turn sideways or upside-down pages and save them the right way up.

Your PDF reader can rotate the view, but the moment you send the file to someone else it's sideways again. This tool rotates the pages inside the file itself, so they open the right way up for everyone: the person you email it to, the portal you upload it to, and you in six months' time.

Rotate everything, or just one page

Open the PDF and you'll see a thumbnail of each page. Use Rotate all left or Rotate all right if the whole document is sideways, which is typical when a phone scanning app guessed the orientation wrong. If it's only the odd landscape table or upside-down page, tap that page's own thumbnail instead; each tap turns it 90° clockwise. Then click Save PDF. Reset returns every page to the original angle if you want to start over.

Why pages end up sideways

Scanners and scanning apps decide orientation from the camera angle or the way the paper was fed. A landscape spreadsheet printed on portrait paper, or a document photographed while lying flat on a desk, regularly ends up 90° off. Some phones record the rotation as a flag in the image instead of rotating the picture, and other software ignores the flag, which is why a photo can look fine on your phone and sideways on a computer. Rotating inside the PDF settles it for good.

Rotation versus cropping and resizing

Rotating doesn't re-print or compress the page, so text stays sharp and selectable. It also doesn't change the page size; it just changes which way is up. If your problem is margins, Crop PDF trims them. If the page is too big or too small, Resize PDF changes it to A4, Letter or another standard size. They often go together: rotate, crop, then resize gives a tidy result from a messy scan.

Tips for mixed documents

  • Check every page. It's easy to fix the first page and miss one at the back. The thumbnails show them all.
  • Landscape pages are fine. A wide table is meant to be landscape; leave it. Only rotate pages that you have to turn your head to read.
  • Fix before signing. If a contract has a page on its side, sign it after rotating so your signature sits upright.
  • Fix before merging. When joining files, rotate any odd ones first, then merge them.

When you want to do more than rotate

If you also need to move or delete pages, Organize PDF does rotation, reordering and deletion in a single visual screen. If a few pages are unwanted, Delete PDF Pages is quicker. And when the pages are in the right direction, you can number them; the numbers are placed relative to the way the page is shown, so they land in the correct corner even on a page that was rotated.

Why it matters more than you'd think

A sideways page in an application is more than a nuisance: reviewers skip things they have to tilt their heads to read, and some automated systems that read documents can't handle rotated pages at all. Taking ten seconds to straighten a file avoids a "please resubmit" email, and in time-sensitive applications that can matter.

As with every tool on this site, the work happens in your browser and the PDF is never uploaded. Password-protected files need to be unlocked in your PDF reader first.

A common real-life case

You photograph a six-page contract on a table with your phone held in landscape. The app saves the PDF, but every page opens on its side in the recipient's reader. Open it here, click Rotate all right, scroll the thumbnails to confirm every page is upright, and save. The fix takes under a minute and lasts: from then on the file opens correctly everywhere.

Which direction should I turn it?

Look at the thumbnail. If the top of the text points to the left, the page needs a turn to the right (clockwise); if the top points right, turn it left. If the page is upside down, tap its thumbnail twice. Don't worry about getting it wrong: the preview updates immediately, and Reset puts everything back. Pages that are already correct don't need touching, and the tool only changes the pages you rotate.

Does it work on scanned documents?

Yes. A scanned page is just a picture inside the PDF, and rotating turns the whole picture. Remember that rotating won't fix a page that was scanned crooked by a few degrees; that needs a "deskew" function in dedicated scanning software. For most uses a slightly crooked page is perfectly readable, and cropping the edges with Crop PDF can hide the worst of the angle.

A worked example with mixed pages

A 9-page file has eight upright pages and one sideways spreadsheet on page 5. Open it, tap only page 5's thumbnail once or twice until it looks right, leave the others alone and save. Scroll through the thumbnails once more before saving to confirm that nothing else changed. That is faster and safer than rotating the whole document and fixing eight pages back again.

Frequently asked questions

Will the rotation stay when I send the file?
Yes. The rotation is saved inside the PDF, so it opens correctly in any reader.
Can I rotate only one page?
Yes. Tap that page's thumbnail to turn it 90° clockwise.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Pages are not re-rendered, so text stays sharp and searchable.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. Rotation happens in your browser.
